The Funicular Scale Model down in the Romanian Forest

The Funicular Scale Model down in the Romanian Forest

This model railway layout was designed by the German artist and model maker Hans Poscher. His layout, showing the famous forestry railway and funicular of Covasna-Comandau in Romania, has been presented and honored at many model train shows in Europe. In 1997, Hans Poscher visited the village of Covasna in Romania and he found this funicular in reality. Immediately after this trip to Romania, he was thinking about modelling this trains, cable cars and funicular as a scale model. He build this railroad system with all the details, especially with the platform carriages, with the station house, with the machine house, with the track system, etc. The model train layout is built in 1:43 scale or O scale narrow gauge with a track width of 16.5 mm. Houses, switches and rolling stock were almost completely made by hand. Rails are taken from the manufacturers PECO and TILLIG.

For Pilentum it was hardly possible to record all these details on video, for example the old city, the beautiful French railway stations, the old castle, the market square, etc. Therefore, Pilentum and the model train club members were made some cab rides along all railroad segements.

He started railway modelling, when he had received a Marklin starter set at the age of 6 years. Since then, he has built his model railroads either in the bedroom or on the attic. In 2000, however, Peter decided to visit model train exhibitions for presenting his model trains. Therefore, he was also at the model railway exhibition Eurospoor in Utrecht, Holland. There, he presented his model railway layout containing thousand details, self-made buildings and many moving figures. The railroad is almost in the background, because the attention of the spectators is directed, for example, to the restaurant with a mobile waiter, to the small toy railway in the window, or to the neighbors who are cutting the hedge at the railway line.

Amazing Marklin pre-war tinplate fully functional model railway in O scale

Amazing Marklin pre-war tinplate fully functional model railway in O scale

Originally, the company named Bing, based in Nuremberg, Germany, manufactured the first toy trains made of tin. On the contrary to today's model railway, these tinplate trains were primarily focused on gaming experience, not on scale conformity or on details. Model trains from the early years - the pre-war period - were mainly made of tin or tinplate. In the 1920’s Bing was the European market leader in tinplate model railways, which were initially operated with a wind-up power and later with electric power. Even the famous company Marklin focused on model railways and produced in the 1930's tin plate trains. Today, railways as well as tin toys of yesterday are absolute rarities. And, if it still is a fully functional model railway, then it’s absolutely unique.
