In 2014, Pilentum visited a model train exhibit in Germany. There was a very large modular model railroad layout built in HO scale. There are a little nudist beach, a trolleybus museum, a great central station and a small city edge model train layout with a scale model of the famous Wuppertal Monorail. And, there are model cars and vehicles from the Faller Car System, too. This modular model train layout was built by a railway club in Germany. In 1989, some model railroaders joined together for founding this model railroad club. Today, almost 25 years later, there are 50 members, and they develop modules for model railroading. The club has got one of the largest portable model railroad systems in Germany. They always built at 1/87 scale. Model trains are running either in two or in three wire operation with analog or digital control. Inside club room, there are nearly 168 individual modules. Regularly, the model railroaders present their model train layouts at model train exhibitions. So in 2014, when Pilentum could visit a variety of these model train modules.
For this cab ride, Pilentum installed the GoPro Hero 3+ camera into a model train locomotive. This model railroad layout in O scale is installed inside the Dresden Transport Museum, Germany.

Before there was the great Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg, this fantastic model railroad layout was built in the year 1997. Then, this model railroad display was the largest DCC controlled model railroad layout in HO scale throughout Germany. In the beginning, the model train layout had an exhibition area of 100 square meters. At that time, 800 meters catenary, 400 railroad switches and 1,200 meters of railway tracks were used. Today, the railway network grew up to 2,000 meters of railway tracks and 200 square meters exhibition area. The entire system is DCC controlled. And, also the day and night lighting is controlled automatically. There are 125 trains, freight cars, passenger cars and locomotives made by different manufacturers, for example, Marklin, Fleischmann and Roco. In addition, there are a big fun park, a large central station, a great port facility and many details.
Pilentum found a model railway exhibition with rare, original and fully functional tinplate model train layout made by Marklin. These tin plate trains were built in 1925. There are some typical metal toys or so-called tinplate toys, for example, a train station, a bridge and a fun park with carousel. And, there is the famous, vintage railroad crossing which our grandsfathers have played with. In the years 1893 to 1954 toy trains were made of tinplate by Märklin. Then, O scale was the dominant size. While the first locomotives were built in a very abstract way, the details of the model trains increased in the 1920s. But even after a century, these tinplate trains never lose their charm and beauty.
Before there was the big miniature airport at Hamburg's Miniature Wonderland, this model airport was built. This model airport is part of an unknow model railroad exhibit in Germany. This model train layout is characterized by a mountain landscape, a canyon with real water and a big mine. The scenario of this model railway layout is based in Canada. On the area of a very big ore mine, rocks are loaded onto long model trains with more than 60 freight cars driven by three diesel locomotives. Then, the freight trains drive along the Rocky Mountains landscape to port, where the ore is loaded onto a ship. Later, the trains pass through a real looking landscape with deep gorges and flowing water. The whole model railroad layout is built in HO scale.
On this modular model railroad layout, there are beautiful steam locomotives and diesel locomotives using sound and steam generator. This modular model railroad layout built in O scale consists of ten modules. All modules have a total length of 10 meters and an overall depth of only 0.5 meters. The entire modular model train layout is operated by DCC decoder LH 100, LS 150 and ESU Switch Pilot. All functions, such as the start-up of locomotives, sound, noises and steam, are controlled digitally via decoders.
